Nara-period Japan, a centralizing imperial state modeled on Tang China with a permanent capital, law codes and state Buddhism.
With a permanent capital at Nara, the Japanese court built a centralized state on the Chinese model, with law codes (ritsuryō), a census-and-land system and a bureaucracy staffed by aristocratic families. State-sponsored Buddhism, symbolized by the Great Buddha at Tōdai-ji, was closely tied to political power. Rivalries between court nobles and powerful monasteries shaped the era.
