Russia, 1855–1894
Autocracy · Monarchy · Eastern Europe · Imperial Zenith era
Late imperial Russia from the emancipation of the serfs through counter-reform and industrialization, an autocracy pressed by revolutionary and national movements.
Alexander II’s "great reforms" – the 1861 emancipation of the serfs, new courts, local assemblies and military reform – modernized the autocracy without introducing national representation, while industrialization and a revolutionary movement grew. His assassination in 1881 brought Alexander III’s counter-reforms, censorship, Russification and repression. The empire expanded in the Caucasus and Central Asia.
