Dutch Republic, 1600–1672
Hybrid Regime · Republic · Western Europe · Age of Absolutism era
A federal merchant republic won independence from Spain and, through relative tolerance and the VOC, built a global trading empire and a golden age of art and science.
The United Provinces, a decentralized federation governed by provincial States and the States General, secured independence from Habsburg Spain by 1648. Relative religious tolerance, a strong urban merchant class and the chartered VOC and WIC companies built a dominant global trading network. A recurring tension between the republican regents and the Orangist stadtholders shaped its politics. Commercial wealth funded a golden age of painting, science and finance until the crisis year of 1672.
