Athens, 461–322 BCE
Democracy · Republic · Mediterranean · Classical Antiquity era
Direct citizen democracy and naval hegemony, interrupted by the Peloponnesian War, oligarchic coups and eventual Macedonian domination.
Sovereignty rested with an assembly of male citizens, with offices filled by lot and rotation and generals elected annually. The Delian League funded a naval empire, and the long Peloponnesian War against Sparta ended in defeat in 404 BCE, briefly interrupting the democracy with oligarchic coups. A plague, factional conflict between democrats and oligarchs, and the trial of Socrates marked internal strains. Macedonian power after 338 BCE progressively curtailed Athenian independence until the democracy was suppressed in 322 BCE.
