Kingdom of Israel, 850–800 BCE
Autocracy · Monarchy · Middle East · Archaic World era
The northern Israelite kingdom at Samaria: prosperous but coup-prone, squeezed between Aram-Damascus and a rising Assyria.
The northern kingdom of Israel, ruled from Samaria, combined agricultural and commercial prosperity with chronic dynastic instability, its throne repeatedly seized by military coups. Israelite and Yahwist identity coexisted with syncretic cults and a prophetic tradition that criticized the monarchy and social inequality. Wars with Aram-Damascus and the growing weight of Assyria framed its politics until the Assyrian conquest of 722.
