An Early Classic Maya city-state of the Petén, a divine-king polity soon reshaped by Teotihuacan’s intervention.
Tikal was a major Early Classic Maya city-state in the Petén lowlands, ruled by a k’uhul ajaw, a "holy lord" whose divine kingship was proclaimed on carved stelae and in monumental architecture. It competed with rival centers for prestige, tribute and trade. In 378 an intervention associated with distant Teotihuacan installed a new dynastic order, reshaping the city’s politics.
