Kingdom of Kush, 800–730 BCE
Autocracy · Monarchy · Africa · Archaic World era
A Nubian kingdom at Napata organized around Amun kingship, consolidating the middle Nile before its conquest of Egypt.
From Napata on the middle Nile, the kingdom of Kush organized itself around the cult of Amun and a sacral kingship legitimized by the Theban priesthood’s traditions. Control of Nubian gold, trade routes and cattle wealth underwrote a centralizing monarchy that increasingly intervened in a fragmented Egypt to its north. By the 720s its rulers had established the Twenty-fifth Dynasty over a reunified Nile.
