Belgian Congo, 1908–1960
Autocracy · Empire · Africa · World War II era
State colony succeeding the Free State, administered jointly by the colonial ministry, mining companies and the Catholic missions, with forced labour and a colour bar, and almost no African participation in government before 1959.
Annexation by Belgium in 1908 replaced personal rule with a colonial ministry, though administration remained shared in practice with mining companies such as Union Minière and with Catholic missions that ran most schooling. Compulsory cultivation and labour recruitment continued, and a colour bar restricted African employment and residence. Primary education was widespread but higher education was opened only in the 1950s, leaving very few graduates at independence. Municipal elections in 1957 were followed by rapid decolonisation and independence in June 1960.
