Philippines, 1898–1946

Autocracy · Empire · Southeast Asia · Interwar Years era

United States rule following the 1898 annexation and a three-year war of resistance, administered through an appointed governor-general with a gradually widening elected legislature and a commonwealth from 1935.

Following the 1898 annexation, a three-year war of resistance was fought before civil administration was established under an appointed governor-general. An elected assembly was created in 1907 and a bicameral legislature in 1916, with the franchise widening over time and a commonwealth government from 1935 that set independence for 1946. Public schooling expanded rapidly in English and land ownership remained concentrated in large estates. Japanese occupation from 1942 was followed by independence in 1946 under agreements retaining United States bases and trade preferences.
