Egypt, 1952–1970
Autocracy · Republic · Middle East · High Cold War era
Nasser built a single-party military republic on Arab nationalism and state-led development, nationalizing the Suez Canal and fighting successive wars with Israel.
The 1952 Free Officers coup ended the monarchy, and Nasser consolidated a single-party republic with land reform, nationalizations and Arab-nationalist mobilization. The 1956 nationalization of the Suez Canal triggered a tripartite invasion that was reversed under international pressure. A leadership of pan-Arabism included union with Syria, intervention in Yemen and confrontation with Israel. Defeat in the 1967 Six-Day War cost Sinai and reshaped the region until Nasser’s death in 1970.
