Saddam Hussein's Ba'athist regime combined a personality cult and Arab nationalism with successive wars, chemical repression and, finally, foreign invasion.

Saddam Hussein formalized his rule in 1979 through a purge of the Ba’ath leadership and governed through the party, security services and a personality cult. The war with Iran from 1980 to 1988 included chemical weapons, and the Anfal campaign and suppression of the 1991 uprisings killed large numbers of Kurds and Shia. The 1990 invasion of Kuwait brought military defeat and more than a decade of sanctions and no-fly zones. A US-led invasion removed the regime in 2003.
