Autocracy · Monarchy · Western Europe · Renaissance era
France under Louis XI, the "Spider King", centralizing royal power against the great nobles and the dukes of Burgundy through diplomacy and a standing army.
Louis XI strengthened the French crown against a coalition of great nobles and the powerful dukes of Burgundy, relying on diplomacy, patronage, a paid standing army and an expanding royal administration rather than pitched battle. The death of Charles the Bold in 1477 allowed France to absorb much of the Burgundian inheritance. The reign advanced the consolidation of royal authority over the great fiefs.
