Habsburg Monarchy, 1740–1780 CE
Autocracy · Monarchy · Central Europe · Enlightenment era
The Habsburg monarchy under Maria Theresa, centralizing administration, army and finance after the War of the Austrian Succession.
Maria Theresa, whose accession triggered the War of the Austrian Succession, responded to the loss of Silesia by centralizing the monarchy’s administration, army, taxation and education. Reforms strengthened the central state at the expense of provincial estates while preserving the dynastic, composite structure. She ruled in partnership with, and then alongside, her son and co-regent Joseph II.
