The Nanda dynasty of Magadha, a wealthy, centralizing north Indian power with a large standing army, precursor to the Maurya empire.
The Nanda dynasty built a powerful, centralizing state in Magadha on the Ganges, drawing on fertile agriculture, iron and river trade to field one of the largest armies of the ancient world. Contemporary accounts describe great wealth and heavy taxation under a low-born ruling line. The dynasty was overthrown by Chandragupta Maurya, founder of the Maurya empire.
