Roman Republic, 80–44 BCE
Hybrid Regime · Republic · Mediterranean · Age of Rome era
Crisis of the late Republic: civil wars, personalization of power, and the breakdown of institutions.
Sulla’s dictatorship set precedents of armies marching on Rome and the proscription of opponents. Extended commands against Mithridates, the pirates and in Gaul attached soldiers’ loyalty to generals rather than institutions. The First Triumvirate bypassed the Senate; its collapse brought civil war and Caesar’s dictatorship. The assassination of 44 BCE failed to restore the republic and opened a further round of civil wars.
