From the first direct presidential election in 1996 to repeated peaceful alternation, under contested international status and sustained pressure from the mainland.

Martial law ended in 1987 and the first direct presidential election was held in 1996, completing a transition from single-party rule. The presidency has since passed between the Kuomintang and the Democratic Progressive Party several times, with an independent judiciary, competitive media and, from 2019, legal same-sex marriage. The state is recognised by few governments and excluded from most international bodies, while the People’s Republic asserts a claim to the island and maintains military pressure.
