Czechoslovakia, 1918–1938
Democracy · Republic · Central Europe · Interwar Years era
The interwar republic held competitive elections and civil liberties throughout, amid minority tensions, until external partition at Munich ended it.
Formed from the Habsburg lands in 1918, the republic held competitive elections, permitted opposition parties and maintained press freedom throughout its existence, alone among the states of interwar central Europe. Industry inherited from the empire made it one of the more developed economies of the region. Relations between Czechs, Slovaks and the German-speaking minority of the borderlands remained contested, and the Depression hit the export industries of those districts hardest. The Munich agreement of 1938 transferred the borderlands to Germany without Czechoslovak participation.
