USSR, 1964–1982
Autocracy · Republic · Eastern Europe · Détente Era era
The Soviet Union under Brezhnev, a stable but stagnating superpower of gerontocratic rule, military parity, détente and eventual overreach in Afghanistan.
Under Leonid Brezhnev the Soviet Union achieved military parity with the United States and a period of political stability, pursuing détente while suppressing dissent at home and reform in the bloc, as in Czechoslovakia in 1968. Beneath the stability the planned economy stagnated, corruption grew and the leadership aged. The 1979 invasion of Afghanistan opened a costly and draining conflict.
