Ottoman Empire, 1876–1909

The Hamidian regime: modernization attempts, repression, and gradual imperial decline.
The 1876 constitution was suspended within two years as Abdulhamid II governed through the palace bureaucracy, censorship and an informer network. Territorial losses in the Balkans and European administration of the public debt narrowed sovereignty. Mass violence against Armenians in the 1890s drew international condemnation. The 1908 Young Turk revolution restored the constitution; after a failed counter-coup in 1909 the sultan was deposed.
