Under Jiang Zemin and the collective leadership of the period, China combined accelerating market reform, state-enterprise restructuring and accession to the World Trade Organization in 2001 with continued single-party control. The party maintained tight control of media and organized dissent while admitting private entrepreneurs into its ranks. Rapid, export-led growth transformed the economy amid rising inequality and corruption.
