A military junta under Pinochet suppressed the left, imposed a market economy and a new constitution, then conceded a negotiated return to democracy.

The 1973 coup against the elected Allende government installed a military junta led by Pinochet. Security services detained, tortured, killed or disappeared thousands of political opponents, and parties and congress were suspended. Market-oriented reforms advised by liberal economists followed a deep recession in 1975 and another in 1982. A 1980 constitution institutionalized the government, and the defeat of Pinochet in the 1988 plebiscite led to an elected government in 1990.
