The Cultural Revolution: mobilization, a leader cult, and top-down destruction of institutions.
The Cultural Revolution was launched against the party apparatus itself; Red Guard mobilization dismantled schools, ministries and provincial committees. The army restored order through revolutionary committees while millions were persecuted and urban youth sent to the countryside. Elite conflict continued through the Lin Biao affair and the Gang of Four. The period ended with Mao’s death and was officially condemned in 1981.
