The Fascists' rise to power, gradual dismantling of institutions, and the building of a leader cult.

The March on Rome produced a coalition premiership that converted into single-party rule through the Acerbo electoral law and the crisis after the Matteotti assassination. By 1926 opposition parties and independent unions were banned and a political police established. The Lateran pacts settled the conflict with the Church, broadening acceptance of the regime. A corporatist economic order and a growing leader cult stabilized the system.
