Poland, 1980–1989
Autocracy · Republic · Eastern Europe · Late Cold War era
Communist Poland in crisis: the Solidarity movement, martial law and economic breakdown ending in the negotiated transition of 1989.
Economic crisis and the rise of the independent Solidarity trade union challenged Poland’s communist regime, which responded with martial law in 1981 and the movement’s suppression. Continued economic breakdown and sustained social pressure, together with reform in the Soviet Union, forced round-table negotiations. Partially free elections in 1989 produced a Solidarity-led government, opening the collapse of communism in Eastern Europe.
