Costa Rica, 1949–2024
Democracy · Republic · Central America · Late Cold War era
A republic that abolished its standing army in 1949 and has held uninterrupted competitive elections since, with regular alternation of power.
The 1948 civil conflict ended with a constituent assembly that dissolved the standing army and vested defence in a police force. Presidential and legislative elections have run on schedule since, supervised by an autonomous electoral tribunal, with power alternating between the main parties and, later, newer ones. Public spending on health and schooling produced life expectancy comparable with far richer states; the later decades brought fiscal deficits and a shift from agricultural exports towards services and electronics.
