Reunified Germany remained a stable federal parliamentary democracy and the anchor of the European Union, governed for most of the period by Angela Merkel’s grand coalitions and then by a three-party coalition. It steered the eurozone through crisis, admitted large numbers of refugees in 2015, and confronted an energy and security reckoning after Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine. Robust institutions coexisted with rising polarization and a fragmenting party system.
