After a peaceful 1905 dissolution of the union with Sweden, Norway consolidated a parliamentary democracy under a constitutional monarchy, extending the vote to all men (1898) and women (1913).
The peaceful 1905 dissolution of the union with Sweden left Norway an independent constitutional monarchy with a strong parliamentary tradition. Universal male suffrage (1898) was followed by universal female suffrage (1913), among the first in the world. Stable Liberal and Conservative competition, a free press and expanding social legislation marked a consolidated small-state democracy.
