Spain, 1982–1996
Democracy · Monarchy · Southern Europe · Late Cold War era
Democratic consolidation after Franco: under González’s Socialists Spain entrenched its 1978 constitutional monarchy, survived a 1981 coup attempt and joined the European Community (1986) and NATO.
The Socialist victory of 1982 consolidated Spain’s young democracy, seven years after Franco’s death and a year after a failed 1981 military coup. The 1978 constitution established a parliamentary monarchy with devolved autonomous communities; González’s governments modernized the economy and society and took Spain into the European Community (1986) and NATO. Peaceful alternation of power confirmed democratic consolidation.
