Reformasi Indonesia after Suharto: a democratic transition of direct elections and decentralization amid the Asian financial crisis and separatist conflict.
The Asian financial crisis and mass protests ended Suharto’s New Order in 1998, opening the Reformasi era of press freedom, direct presidential elections and sweeping decentralization to the regions. Communal and separatist conflicts flared in several provinces, and East Timor voted for independence in 1999. The military withdrew from its formal political role over the period.
