Mongolia, 1990–2024

Democracy · Republic · Central Asia · The 2010s era

Peaceful transition from single-party socialist rule to competitive elections with regular alternation, balancing between two large neighbours.

Protests and hunger strikes in early 1990 led the ruling party to relinquish its monopoly without violence, followed by multiparty elections and a new constitution in 1992. Government has alternated between the successor party and its opponents in every subsequent decade. The command economy was dismantled, livestock privatised, and mining of copper and coal became the main export earner, tying the budget to commodity cycles. Foreign policy balances between Russia and China alongside ties to what the state terms third neighbours.
