Kamakura Japan, 1185–1333 CE
Autocracy · Monarchy · East Asia · Mongol Century era
The Kamakura shogunate under the Hōjō regents, a warrior government ruling Japan in the emperor’s name through vassalage and land stewardship.
The Kamakura shogunate established a parallel warrior government (bakufu) that ruled through appointed military stewards and constables while the imperial court at Kyoto retained ceremonial primacy. After the founding Minamoto line, the Hōjō family governed as hereditary regents for figurehead shoguns. Vassal obligations, land tenure disputes and the costly repulse of two Mongol invasions strained the regime over the thirteenth century.
