Turkey, 1923–1938

Autocracy · Republic · Middle East · Interwar Years era

Atatürk founded a secular single-party republic, abolishing the caliphate and imposing sweeping legal, script and cultural reforms from above.

Mustafa Kemal Atatürk proclaimed the republic in 1923 and abolished the sultanate and caliphate, founding a secular unitary state. A single-party government under the Republican People’s Party enacted the Latin script, legal codes, dress and language reforms and state-led industrialization. Opposition and revolts, including the 1925 Sheikh Said rebellion and the 1937–38 Dersim events, were suppressed. The reforms, legitimated by a strong leader cult, established the institutional framework of modern Turkey.
