Yugoslavia, 1945–1980
Autocracy · Republic · Southern Europe · High Cold War era
Tito led a nonaligned socialist federation that broke with Stalin, held its ethnic tensions in check, and pioneered worker self-management.
The Communist Party under Josip Broz Tito unified a federation of six republics after the Second World War and broke with Stalin in 1948. A distinctive model of worker self-management and nonalignment developed alongside a one-party state and the suppression of nationalist dissent. Federal balancing of ethnic groups and constitutional decentralization managed but did not resolve underlying tensions. Tito’s personal authority held the federation together until his death in 1980.
