Argentina, 1976–1983
Autocracy · Republic · South America · Détente Era era
A military junta ran the National Reorganization Process, waging a "Dirty War" of forced disappearances before collapsing after defeat in the Falklands.
A 1976 coup installed a military junta that suspended congress and launched the National Reorganization Process. State security forces detained, tortured and disappeared an estimated tens of thousands of suspected leftists in a clandestine campaign. Market-oriented economic policy coincided with rising foreign debt and industrial decline. The junta’s defeat in the 1982 Falklands/Malvinas war discredited it and led to elections and a return to civilian rule in 1983.
