India, 2014–2024

Hybrid Regime · Republic · South Asia · Present Day era

Dominant-party centralization with Hindu-nationalist mobilization, contested federalism and declining press-freedom indices.

Parliamentary majorities in 2014 and 2019 ended coalition dependence and centralized campaigning around the prime minister. Citizenship legislation, the 2019 Kashmir reorganization and the farm-law protests marked polarizing reforms. Press-freedom and civil-liberty indices declined, and Regimes of the World coded India as an electoral autocracy for part of the period. Growth and welfare digitization sustained electoral dominance amid an active opposition and judiciary.
